1How do I get into ChatGPT's answers?

ChatGPT bases its answers on two sources: what the model learned during training, and what it looks up live on the web. The same principle applies to both: the more often and the more clearly your brand appears in trustworthy sources in connection with a topic, the more likely you are to be mentioned.

  • Answer questions literally. Use the question as a heading and give a clear two- to three-sentence answer directly below it.
  • Be specific about who you are. State your brand, what you sell and who it's for, consistently and in the same words across multiple pages.
  • Build coherence. A network of articles on a single topic makes you a recognizable source. See topical authority.
  • Make sure you're mentioned elsewhere too: reviews, comparison sites, industry publications.
  • Rank in Google. The live search feature in AI tools often pulls its sources from the top search results. SEO and GEO reinforce each other; see is SEO still necessary.

2How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my webshop?

Being recommended goes a step further than being mentioned. ChatGPT recommends what it recognizes as a suitable, trustworthy option for a specific question, such as "where can I buy a good LED projector?".

To get there, your site needs to make three things clear: what problem you solve, for whom, and why you're a good choice. Buying guides, comparisons and advice articles ("which projector suits which room") work especially well here, because they answer exactly the questions people ask AI.

Always link that advice content to your collections, so the AI has a concrete place to point to. Also read why ChatGPT does mention your competitor.

3What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

GEO is optimizing your online presence so that generative AI search engines, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, know your brand, understand it and mention it in their answers.

Where SEO is about a high position in a list of links, GEO is about being included in a single, composed answer. There's no page 2: you either get mentioned or you don't.

GEO builds on good SEO, but puts extra emphasis on clear, quotable answers, consistent brand information and mentions on other sites. The differences from SEO and AEO are laid out side by side in SEO, GEO and AEO compared.

4How do I get mentioned in Gemini or Perplexity?

The principles are the same as for ChatGPT, with a few different emphases:

  • Gemini is closely tied to Google Search. Ranking well in Google and being included in AI Overviews significantly increases your chances.
  • Perplexity searches the web live for almost every question and shows its sources. Up-to-date, well-structured pages with clear answers are often cited here.

For all AI search engines, the rule is: write so that any single paragraph from your article is a complete answer on its own. That's exactly what AI cuts out and uses.

5How do I measure whether AI mentions my brand?

Search Console tells you nothing about ChatGPT. So you have to measure it actively: ask different AI search engines the questions your customers ask, and record whether, how often and in what context your brand is mentioned.

Doing that manually is a lot of work, because the answers differ each time. The Rankbird App does it automatically: it periodically asks ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini a fixed set of questions and shows, per engine, how often you're mentioned and how that changes over time. That way you also see which competitors do get mentioned.

6Why does ChatGPT mention my competitor but not me?

Usually for one of these reasons:

  • Your competitor has more content on the topic, and that content answers questions more directly.
  • Your competitor is mentioned more often elsewhere: in reviews, comparisons, forums and the news.
  • Your competitor ranks better in Google, so AI tools that search live find their pages first.
  • Your brand information is unclear or inconsistent, so the AI isn't sure what you do.

The good news: AI visibility is still a young playing field. With targeted content you can catch up relatively quickly. Start with how to get into ChatGPT's answers.

7Is SEO still necessary now that people use ChatGPT?

Yes, more than ever. Google still handles the vast majority of all searches, and AI search engines lean heavily on the same signals as Google: well-structured, trustworthy content on sites with authority.

What is changing is what "good SEO" means. Pages that just repeat keywords are losing ground. Pages that answer questions clearly and completely are winning, in Google and in AI. That's why Rankbird works on SEO, GEO and AEO at the same time.
