1Where do you start with webshop SEO optimization?

Don't start by writing; start by looking. Most webshops waste their first months on scattered actions: a blog here, a meta title there. The order is what makes the difference.

  • 1. Get the technical side in order. Can Google find and index your pages? Check this in Google Search Console under 'Pages'. Also read how to read Search Console.
  • 2. Base your structure on search data. For each category, figure out what people actually search for. Your collection and category pages are your most important pages, not your homepage.
  • 3. Optimize collections and products. Unique titles, a short introductory text and good internal links. For Shopify, this is covered in detail in optimizing collection pages.
  • 4. Content that answers questions. Only then do blogs come in, built as a cluster around your categories. See topical authority.

If you stick to this order, you'll usually see the first movement within a few months. You can read exactly how long it takes in how long SEO takes.

2How do I make sure my webshop gets found in Google?

Google shows the page that best answers a search query. So getting found means having a page for every important search query that matches it exactly.

In practice, that comes down to three things. First, Google has to be able to read your site: a sitemap, no blocked pages and fast load times. Second, every page needs a clear topic, with the keyword in the title, the heading and the URL. Third, your site has to show that you know the topic inside out, with connected content and internal links.

More and more often, a search no longer starts in Google but in ChatGPT or Gemini. If you want to show up there too, read how to get into ChatGPT's answers.

3Why is nobody visiting my webshop?

If nobody is visiting, it's almost always one of these five causes:

  • Google doesn't know your pages. They aren't in the index. Check this in Search Console.
  • Your pages aren't targeting keywords. "New collection" or "Shop" means nothing to Google; "men's linen shirt" does.
  • Your domain is still new. A new site hasn't built up any trust yet. That takes time; see how long SEO takes.
  • Too little content. Product pages with just a few lines of text rarely rank.
  • You do rank, but not quite high enough. Positions 11 to 20 get almost no clicks. Those are your striking distance keywords, and they're the quickest to improve.

4How long does it take for SEO to show results?

Honest answer: you usually see the first movement after two to three months, and solid results build up over six to twelve months. It depends on three factors: how old and strong your domain is, how much competition there is in your niche, and how consistently you publish.

Organic growth isn't linear. In the first months you're laying the foundation and it seems like little is happening. Then the compounding effect kicks in: every new page strengthens the previous ones. People who stop after three months often stop just before the curve bends upward.

Want to become visible faster? Then start with keywords where you're already in positions 11 to 20; those can move to page 1 within weeks. Read what striking distance keywords are.

5How do I get a new webshop onto page 1 without ads?

It's possible, but only with focus. A new webshop won't win on broad keywords like "buy clothes". You win on specific searches with less competition, so-called long-tail keywords, such as "satin blouse with lace".

The approach that works:

  • Pick one niche to dominate instead of having a small presence everywhere.
  • Create one strong page per search intent: collections for purchase intent, blogs for questions.
  • Publish on a fixed schedule. Google rewards consistency. How much is enough? See how many blogs per month.
  • Connect everything with internal links, so authority flows through to your product pages. See blogs that link to your products.

On our overall score you can see a new fashion brand that reached page 1 this way, without ads.

6How do I get found without paying for Google Ads?

Google Ads brings in traffic for as long as you pay; stop paying and the traffic stops. Organic visibility works the other way around: it takes time at first, but then keeps paying off.

In SEO, free only means you don't pay per click. You do invest time, or pay someone to do the work. The biggest levers without an ad budget are your collection pages, a knowledge base that answers customer questions, and a properly set up Google Search Console.

On top of that, there's a new channel that almost nobody is using yet: AI search engines. If you make sure ChatGPT and Perplexity mention you now, you'll have a head start. Read what GEO is.
